One of the most underrated but extremely disturbing challenges a school can probably face is a noisy class. If your students just can’t keep their mouths shut, the possible effects include;
- Disruption of other classroom activities
- Inconveniencing other students and teachers having a quiet time
- Misunderstandings with the school’s neighborhood
Besides all this, noisy classes usually mean it’s hard or impossible to control students – and chaos can break out at any time. In this article, we’re going to look at the reasons why some classrooms get noisy.
1. Boring classes/ teachers
Sometimes, some teachers fail to engage the entire classroom in the topic of discussion. Because of that, the learners start whispering to one another – and the volume can keep increasing if it’s not contained as soon as possible.
Of course, this doesn’t mean all teachers have to turn themselves into comedians. You just have to learn to engage your audience fully.
2. Disorderly communication methods
Some teachers don’t know that their way of communication matters a lot in making or breaking the order of the classroom. Some of the mistakes in communication include;
- Allowing students to give answers without raising their hands
- Letting students conduct noisy arguments during your lesson
- Keeping their voices high while addressing the students – making them imitate the same pitch
When teachers mess up the communication system, everything gets messed up and before you know it, the classroom has degenerated into chaos.
3. Notorious students
Some students are just unruly, and they follow no rules. They cause trouble right from the classroom, to the compound, and to the dormitories.
Usually, the best way to prevent these students from negatively influencing other students is by expelling them from school.
4. Absence of class rules
Every classroom, just like every school, should have its own set of rules and regulations that guide students on how to behave while in the classroom. Sometimes, teachers fail to set the rules because;
- They don’t think their students are capable of mischief
- Laziness and procrastination
- Leaving that to the school administration
Without a set of rules handed out to every student or pinned on the class notice board, there are high chances of having a disorderly and noisy class.
5. Absence of class leaders
As you probably already know, almost every school has prefects and class monitors because they help in the maintenance of order and upholding of the school rules and regulations.
Usually, a class without a leader will be chaotic – unlike one with incorruptible leaders that will report all those students that disrupt. For this to work, it should be done without fear or favor.
6. No fear of repercussions
Some students are just big-headed, and they believe they can do whatever they want and get away with it. This is common among students that aren’t so good with academics – therefore believing there’s nothing they have to lose.
Usually, they even intimidate the class monitors or prefects, threatening to possibly harm them if they are reported.
7. Absence of the teacher
In some schools with a less-strict policy about absenteeism, there are so many teachers that miss their classes. This makes students stay in empty classrooms and resort to their peers to kill the boredom.
Usually, this can be solved if another teacher comes and fills the gap, or someone takes charge and supervises the classroom.
8. Noisy teacher
When teachers themselves are rowdy, you then know that the noisy classes can’t be done away with jus yet. This is because these teachers will cause the noise by;
- Allowing students to behave the way they want
- Cracking endless jokes and not controlling how students react to them
- Singing songs with their students and not advising them to lower their voices
Though uncommon, some teachers cause the problem, and they simply have to be guided on how to solve it.
9. Chaotic situations
When chaos breaks out in a school, you know right there that everything is going from orderly to disorganized. Examples of the chaotic situations include;
- Strikes
- Unguided arguments
- Fights/ brawls
In this case, a noisy class is just a symptom of something way bigger – and deserving of more attention and treatment.
10. Contempt to the teacher
Some children won’t heed to the teacher no matter how many times you warn them or ask them to keep quiet. This is usually done to new teachers, interns or physically weak teachers.
The students who show disrespect to these teachers usually think they (teachers) can’t do anything to them.
Conclusion;
A noisy class is always the beginning of a rowdy school. Therefore, every teacher has to make sure that order in school starts right inside of the classroom. Students have to be controlled to make sure that they don’t make unnecessary noise to disturb any other person coexisting with them.
