The girl child, in most African homes, is given more attention than the boy child because of the numerous expectations that parents have in her, especially when she is married off.
However, the headmaster of Kings Way Primary School, Aggrey Kimera, thinks it’s time to change that perception and include the boy-child as well.
“The issue of gender mainstreaming should not only be used to promote only girls. Attention should be paid to the boys as well.”
The headmaster made these remarks during the election of the school’s new prefect leaders at Seguku village in Wakiso district on Friday.
When it comes to focusing on child development, he observed that parents have concentrated more on the girl child, while the boys are left out.
“Parents should support the boys in child upbringing to allow them get attracted to participating in democracy through school leadership positions,” he said.
He said during the campaigns of the student in search of their new leadership, girls showed more interest than the boys.
Kimera attributed this difference to the country having more women in the current cabinet of President Yoweri Museveni and in other positions.
“Unlike the old times, Uganda currently has more women in top positions than you can count. Look at the Vice President, Prime Minister, Speaker of Parliament and the number of Ministers and MPs. Women are also at the forefront of huge companies these days,’’ he said.
