Mandatory Safety Inspections Scheduled for School Transport
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has announced a nationwide compliance exercise targeting school buses and vans across the country. This initiative is scheduled to commence next week as students prepare to return to school on April 27.
As part of the ‘Operation Watoto Wafike Salama’ initiative, the NTSA is prioritizing the safety of learners during their daily commutes. The authority highlighted that mechanical failures and poorly maintained transport vehicles are significant contributors to road accidents involving students.
Key Inspection Criteria
The upcoming inspections will evaluate several essential safety elements. Technicians will examine the mechanical state of braking systems, tires, and lighting, alongside the structural soundness of each vehicle. Furthermore, officials will confirm that speed governors are operational and that all seats are equipped with functional safety belts.
Route compliance will also be a major point of verification. All school transport vehicles are required to operate strictly within their approved designated routes. For further information regarding educational regulations and related updates, visit teacher.co.ke.
Regulation of Operating Hours and Driver Conduct
The NTSA has reiterated the strict operating window for school transport, which is prohibited from being on the road before 6:00 am or after 6:00 pm. This regulation is intended to mitigate risks associated with poor visibility and fatigue. The authority noted that travel outside these hours significantly increases the risk of road incidents.
In addition to vehicle checks, enforcement teams will verify the licensing and qualifications of drivers. Sobriety tests will also be conducted to ensure that those responsible for student transport are fit for duty. This intensified enforcement follows recent road safety concerns raised by the National Police Service.
Enforcement and Consequences
School administrations have been cautioned that failure to comply with these safety standards will result in strict penalties. The NTSA stated that vehicles or institutions found in violation of the regulations may face the immediate revocation of their operating licenses.
