Summary of the Education System of Zimbabwe

According to Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, MoPSE, the education system offers a total of 4 years of the Infant education module. This module comprises 2 years of Early Childhood Development (ECD), and 2 years of formal primary education.

The last 2 years of the Infant module in Primary, is then followed by five years of the junior education module. This sums up to 7 years, at the end of which the students sit for the National Grade 7 examinations. The examinations are administered by the  Zimbabwe School Examination Council (ZIMSEC) responsible for all the national examinations.

The Junior Education module is followed by 4 years lower secondary education course, whose climax is the “O” Level examinations.

After the O Level examinations, the students then join the upper secondary Education for 2 years. They then sit for “A” Level examinations.

Some “O” Level secondary school graduates opt to join training institutions such as polytechnics, technical colleges, teachers’ colleges, and agricultural colleges, while others enter the job market.

The “A” Level (Upper Secondary School) graduates either enter into universities or training institutions.
