Makerere University students won the Huawei ICT competition in the Rainbow Nation, South Africa.
This was confirmed by the university’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Barnabas Nawangwe on his official Twitter page.
“Uganda’s flag rises high again as Makerereans win the Huawei continental ICT competition, at a grand finale event held in South Africa. I congratulate the team on this great representation,” he tweeted.
Huawei ICT Competition is for university and college students to showcase their skills in national, regional and global finals.
The competition aims to drive the development of high-quality ICT talent, select qualified talent for the industry, continuously provide future driving forces and active participants for digital transformation, promote efficient mapping of talent supply and demand, and further contribute to a sustainable talent ecosystem.
Last month, Huawei announced the results of the 2021/22 Sub-Saharan Africa competition with Makerere and Muni University at the lead.
This win now means that Makerere university has advanced to the Huawei ICT Global finals in China this coming May.
In his congratulatory message, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni thanked the Makerere University students for winning this competition for Sub Saharan Africa having beaten 19 countries and 36 teams.
“I call upon you to use these skills to innovate and create jobs for yourselves & others and wish you luck in the global competitions,’’ Museveni said.
