Caritas Kampala (CK) in partnership with a German organization of young children known as Kindermissionwerk have built toilet facilities for girls and rubbish bins in different districts.
The director of Caritas Kampala, Fr John Peter Musumba, handed over the toilets built at Kamuli Primary School in Bulo, Butambala district on Sunday.
According to Fr. Musumba, several new toilets have been constructed at Bulungu Primary School, Kkonge, Sacred Heart Ggoli, Kizimba, Simba Primary School and Guadalupe Secondary School.
All the toilet facilities that also have changing rooms, particularly for the girls, were constructed at a cost between sh18m to sh20m.
Fr Musumba said that girls always suffer to look for clean toilets during their monthly periods which leads many to drop out of school because the school hasn’t got basic toilets.
“Lack of toilets puts girls at risk of shame and assault. They have no adequate sanitation, which are all basic things most of us take for granted,” he said.
He added that Caritas Kampala and Kindermissionwerk constructed safe pit toilets for girls in schools to help them so they don’t miss school especially when they reach puberty.
Musumba called upon girls to keep the toilets clean, “these are girl’s toilets, so we don’t expect teachers and boys to use them. Also, keep them clean. We don’t want to come and we find the toilet when they are dirty like some places where we built toilets and spoiled them.”
Engineer Richard Mayanja said that the toilets were built to preserve the environment as ministry education requested.
